The Brief

As the Premier League started back up during lockdown with no spectators allowed in the stadium, West Ham United wanted to bring their loyal fans back virtually. The West Ham United supporters are the lifeblood of the football club and, as manager David Moyes has said, are the inspiration for the players as they aim for a strong finish to the Premier League campaign. West Ham United reached out to Noonah to see if we would help them to place their fans into the London Stadium, whilst tying in their large branded prints that would be covering the seats.

The Solution

To bring the fans into the stadium, it was decided to have the fans make up the famous Billy Bonds flag of the crossed irons by creating a giant photo mosaic of using user-generated content. This was achieved using our virtual photo mosaic service with users submitting their image via a custom online form on West Ham’s website. Each submitted image was vetted to make sure it was suitable for image quality and also so that only West Ham fans appeared, and nothing off-brand.

The Results

The form was live for just 2 days and over 6000 fans submitted photos thanks to a social media campaign and national radio mention. With plans for just one mosaic to be created, we instead created two due to the overwhelming popularity. There are 1,900 photos across the 2 mosaics, making a total of 3,800 fan photos. The Club was over oversubscribed with requests for the fan mosaic and so a random selection process was used to populate photos to the mosaic. However, West Ham will be looking to use a selection of photos across their channels in the future, so fans who didn’t make it on the mosaic may still have a chance to feature in another way.

We had a narrow turnaround time in order to get both mosaics created and off to the printers in time for the first match. Each mosaic measured 24.5m x 20m, with each photo being a 500mm x 500mm tile; making this an impressive mosaic. West Ham United and their fans loved the end result with it being proudly displayed for all to see on the live matches.

More Work with West Ham United

After the success of the mosaics, West Ham United wanted to continue using a photo capture with their fans. So we built a branded photo booth that football fans can use to capture memories before the games. West Ham fans just love taking selfies and getting involved with the club.
