The Brief

Nando’s wanted to promote their new ‘mood’ menu, and as part of the campaign. To achieve this they wanted a way to depict people’s auras and offer food that would suit them. As Nando’s primary market is Generation Y (18 – 30-year-olds), the campaign targeted students across the UK. The experience visited campuses of three UK universities (Liverpool, Manchester, and Nottingham) and there was an online experience for students to take part virtually. The campaign allowed students to exchange a photo opportunity in return for a free Nando’s by learning about their aura.

Virtual Photo Booth+ used for Nandos #PlaceYourAura campaign

Nando’s student tour outside NTU Student Union.

The Solution

Students visited Nando’s #PlaceYourAura pop-up booth, including our Photo Booth technology. Here, they were asked a series of questions on the Photo Booth screen, and when taking their photo, it determined which aura they were using a coloured filter. Each aura represented a personalised Nando’s menu item. After placing their aura, students received a printed polaroid via the Photo Booth, depicting themselves surrounded by the colours that best represent their aura.  After the photo experience, students headed to Nando’s food truck to claim their very personal mood meal for free. So, whether you present as passionate and ambitious ‘fiery red’ or more peaceful and chilled ‘calming green,’ there will be something for everyone who popped down to test their aura. If the students weren’t hungry after the photo experience, they could show their printed polaroid at their local Nando’s restaurant up to 48 hours after the event. So they could also enjoy a free Quarter of Chicken or side.

Students who couldn’t make the event or attend university virtually could head to the Nando’s Yard Website and experience the campaign online. Instead of our in-person Photo Booth, people attending virtually could use our Virtual Photo Booth+. The virtual experience had the same concept whereby a student would take a photo, and a coloured filter is then applied that represents their aura. The online output told the user about their auras and chose an item from the Nando’s menu that would best suit their mood.

Both the In-Person Photo Booth and Virtual Photo Booth+ captured students’ email addresses, so they could receive their photos digitally and share them online. the campaign also incentivised posting to social media by offering a £100 Nando’s gift card to anyone that shared their photo to Twitter with #PlaceYourAura.

The attention that the brand experience received was phenomenal, with queues all through the day to take part (even in the rain!). There were a total of 1,725 photos taken and lots of Nando’s consumed.
